Discussion: Hamlet's Madness

To what extent is Hamlet mad? Is it true madness or is it for pretend?

  1. I believe that Hamlet is not truely mad. He must play mad in order to remove any suspision that the King might have of him. You know that it is pretend because while at the play both Hamlet and Ophelia are flirting but this flirting isn't the deranged flirting that Hamlet had been doing before to get everyones attention. I do believe though that Hamlet is starting to lose his mind. In act 5 scene 1 while the Laetes is morning his sister Hamlet comes in trying to out-morn him. This kind of action makes it seem like he is progressing into maddness.
