-Does the fire of Coketown over take Louisa's fire?

  1. I definately believe that the fire of Coketown hasn't taken over Louisa's fire. I think it is more like the fire of Coketown engulfed Louisa's fire, but then she was spit back out so to speak. Her fire was overtaken when she literally falls to her father's feet comlaining about how she can't take life anymore. Gradgrind "saw a wild dilating fire in the eyes steadfastly regarding him" (211) when her strength was leaving her. This shows how she is becoming engulfed by the fire of Coketown because her own fire is out of control and dying. She ends up as "an insensible heap, at his feet" (212). This passage shows the failure of the Gradgrindian system because Louisa (the pride of the system) has fallen to rock bottom in her life. The fact that she has fallen shows that the fire of Coketown has finished her off. However, I feel like the fire then "spits her back out" because I believe at the end of the book her life is back to climbing up "the staircase". I think she gets a fresh start to life by being at the influence of Sissy.
